More than any other weekly publication in Prince Edward Island, La Voix Acadienne has contributed to the knowledge and appreciation of Acadian heritage and culture on Prince Edward Island.
It has done so through the publication of various reports, the production of historic publications and the creation of a popular website.
From September 2005 to March 2008 La Voix published the chronicle of Pélagie et Henriette, a column by Alice Richard which recounted stories of life in a small Acadian village in the 1940s. When its run in La Voix was completed, the entire chronicle was published as a book in 2008.
In 2013, journalist Nick Arsenault visited seniors across PEI to collect their memories. The next year, a compilation of these stories was published in La Voix, alongside numerous photographs.
In 2020 – the year that marked the 300th anniversary of a permanent French presence on the Island – La Voix published the column “Images from the Past,” by Island historian Georges Arsenault. It featured some 540 historic photographs from Acadian families on the Island, with accompanying text. The same year, the newspaper published anecdotes and memories of a centenarian, by Denise Arsenault.
Since 2016, on Heritage Day and Rendez-vous de La Francophonie, La Voix has published a quiz about Acadian history and culture as prepared by Sister Antoinette DesRoches Historical Committee.
La Voix Acadienne makes a point of covering nearly all activities that take place at the Acadian Museum of Prince Edward Island – which, of course, is one of our seven sites, and which you should all go and visit!
