Myrna Babineau stands as a champion of Scottish culture and heritage on Prince Edward Island. Through various decades-long initiatives, Myrna has been instrumental in preserving and celebrating the rich heritage of Scottish settlers.
At the forefront of Myrna's efforts is her leadership within the PEI Scottish Settlers Historical Society. Myrna has played pivotal roles within the society, serving as President, Treasurer, and committee chair or member. She led the Alexander Committee, which meticulously researched and published The Glenaladale Settlers 1772 in 2016, providing invaluable insights into the early settlers' journey. Her continued research efforts resulted in an updated second edition in 2022, commemorating the settlers' 250th anniversary.
Myrna's commitment to hands-on preservation is evident in her care for the Scotchfort Pioneer Cemetery, a sacred site of Island Scottish heritage. She has also coordinated events like the annual Robbie Burns Luncheon, organized genealogical and artifact days, and served as a judge for the PEI Heritage Fairs, fostering community engagement and historical literacy. Beyond local initiatives, Myrna has secured historic recognition for figures like Captain John MacDonald, elevating their significance nationally. Moreover, she has contributed to publications like MacDonald of Redland, South Moral in Scotland, and Canada. Her partnerships and collaborative efforts have amplified the voices of Scottish descendants across the Island and beyond.
