In her book Through the Eyes of a Dog, Métis author and animal enthusiast Nicole Lodge engages children in learning and promotes messages of equity, inclusion, and identity exploration.
During her pursuit of a Master of Education in Interdisciplinary Leadership at the University of Prince Edward Island from 2022 to 2023, Nicole created Through the Eyes of a Dog. This children’s book tells the story from the canine’s perspective as he embarks on a journey home. Along the way, the dog encounters many characters, each representing different body types, relationship dynamics, races, ages, and genders. Through the dog's respectful interactions with each character, the book imparts a powerful message of equality and kindness, encouraging young readers to embrace diversity and treat everyone with dignity.
While residing on the Island, Nicole collaborated closely with Mi’kmaq Elders and members of the Acadian community to ensure the translation and publication of her book in Mi’kmaq and French. Nicole's commitment extended to her Indigenous roots in British Columbia, where she was in the process of translating the book into Cree Michif and Dakelh.
For her dedication to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion with Through the Eyes of a Dog, Nicole Lodge is honoured with a Heritage Recognition Award.
