Her fascination with local history, a passion inherited from both her parents, is evident in the copious amounts of volunteer work she does in her community.
Jackie played a pivotal role in establishing the "Murray Harbour Historical Society." As a founding member of the Murray Harbour Farmers Market, Jackie also incorporates local history into the weekly market through artifacts, slide shows, and demonstrations. Her dedication extends to other community projects, such as the Memorial Tree and the restoration of the Pioneer Cemetery, both of which showcase her commitment to honouring the past.
Jackie dedicates considerable time and effort to organizing annual summer historical walks, as well as eerie ghost walks, where she plays the character of the widow Elizabeth.
These walks feature stories passed down from surrounding communities and have gained widespread acclaim. She is also involved in Murray Harbour’s Annual Remembrance Day Service, where she actively involves both younger and older participants, displaying veterans' memorabilia and fostering a sense of connection across generations. Notably, Jackie played a crucial role in bringing the Torch Relay for the Canada Games to her village, leaving an enduring mark on the community.
Murray Harbour and surrounding communities have expressed profound gratitude for Jackie's contributions, which have enriched their love and appreciation for the historical foundations of their community. For her dedication to the heritage of Murray Harbour and beyond, Jackie MacNeill Doiron is honoured with the Catherine Hennessey Heritage Activism Award.
