Josh Silver possesses an impressive understanding of Prince Edward Island's architectural heritage. What is perhaps even more impressive, however, is how he shares his knowledge. Josh has dedicated himself to shaping the next generation of Heritage Retrofit Carpenters who can preserve and repair the Island's beauty. At Holland College, he teaches the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry Program, where he imparts his knowledge and passion to students through meaningful architectural endeavours.
Over the years, Josh has undertaken numerous projects for the community and the development of his students. To cite just one example, in 2023, his class worked to make the Anne of Green Gables house in Cavendish wheelchair accessible. Under Josh Silver’s mentorship, students enlarged the door openings at Green Gables to enhance accessibility, with three more doors in progress.
The class has also worked on other aspects of the site, such as erecting more informational kiosks. But Green Gables is just the tip of the iceberg. Josh and his students have worked on preserving, restoring – and retrofitting – historic buildings across the province, including St. Dunstan’s Cathedral, Province House, and Glenaladale House.
Beyond the classroom, Josh influences the entire community daily and takes pride in the success of each of his students. Josh serves as an inspiration to his students, encouraging them to transform the knowledge they acquire into meaningful careers in Heritage Restoration. For his dedication to preserving, restoring, and sharing the Island’s architectural heritage, Josh Silver is awarded the Irene Rogers Architectural Award.
