About the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation

The PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation is an integral part of the Prince Edward Island community. We operate seven provincial museums and heritage sites across Prince Edward Island, providing Islanders and visitors alike with an opportunity to discover our province's heritage and culture.

The Foundation is responsible for the provincial collection of more than 100,000 artifacts. Our staff provides professional conservation and collection services to outside groups, individuals, and organizations. The Foundation publishes its official journal of PEI heritage and culture twice a year: The Island Magazine. The Foundation also has an official podcast, the hidden island, which shares stories about the hidden heritage in our province and discusses why that heritage is still relevant today.

Our mission is to preserve the heritage of Prince Edward Island for present and future generations.

Our organization is seeking Storytellers!

Do you know about an interesting PEI-based story that others should also know about?
•   A group or organization that has had an impact on its community?
•   A slice of Island history that has yet to get the spotlight it deserves?
•   An old legend or folktale passed down over the years?

Island Digital Voices (IDV), a video series produced by the PEI Museum & Heritage Foundation, is searching for new and established storytellers (writers, journalists, historians, poets, town bards, etc.) to share these types of stories. Previous seasons focused on interviewing individual Islanders. For the upcoming season, we want to showcase our province’s community groups and local folklore and legends.

If your pitch is selected, you’ll be responsible for researching, conducting interviews, and crafting a vision for the video alongside our series coordinator, videographer and video editor. If you’re not quite sure whether your pitch will fit with our series, we want to hear it anyway!

Seeking: Six storytellers, each with a unique story pitch(es)
Period: Between October 2024 and Summer 2025
Pay Rate: Storytellers receive $350 for a story piece

Island Digital Voices (IDV) is currently in search of a skilled Videographer. We are looking for an individual with a creative eye and experience in working with video and audio equipment to help capture the stories of PEI community groups and local legends for Season Four of our docuseries.

Having a valid driver's license and a vehicle will be considered an asset.

The videographer will be compensated $500 per video and is expected to create up to six videos from Fall 2024 to Summer 2025 starting as soon as possible.

📣 The Island Magazine Seeks Editor 📣

The Editor is responsible for the overall editorial strategy of The Island Magazine both in print and online. This contract role reports to the Prince Edward Island Museum & Heritage Foundation’s (PEIMHF) Curator of History and is responsible for managing the editorial, production and distribution roles connected to The Island Magazine.

The editor works with PEIMHF’s Executive Director and the Curator of History to develop a vision for The Island Magazine and its mission to contribute to scholarly and creative dialogue. The editor is responsible for managing and coordinating the on-time and on-budget production of the publication under the supervision of the Curator of History and in concert with The Island Magazine Editorial Committee, as well as copy editors, proofreaders and publications designers hired by the PEIMHF.

The editor is responsible for the solicitation of articles from the broad array of fields studied by PEIMHF. The editor works with numerous authors, both professional and amateur heritage researchers, to ensure timely and complete submission of articles and supporting notes and images. The editor and the Editorial Committee review the articles, and provide feedback and suggestions. There are circumstances where external review is required by experts in the respective field. Occasionally the editor may be asked to work with a guest editor selected by the Executive Director and Curator of History.

The Editor will also be charged with marketing, promoting and distributing The Island Magazine at retail locations. This will involve working with the Sales, Marketing & Membership Coordinator on mass mail-out of The Island Magazine to members and subscribers, as well as dropping off copies of The Island Magazine at current retail locations and scouting and drafting agreements with potential retail locations. It will also involve working with the Communication and Fundraising Coordinator, along with the Sales, Marketing & Membership Coordinator to promote The Island Magazine via both traditional and digital media, as well as through events such as an issue launch.

Contract term: September 2023 to September 2024
Pay: $21 per hour + 8% vacation pay for up to 250 hours.

Job Responsibilities:

Responsible for the overall editorial direction of The Island Magazine’s print and digital platforms, in accordance with our strategic plan.
Actively solicit appropriate content for each issue, ensuring a diversity of writers.
Ensure the magazine and online platforms include a wide range of contributors, reflecting the diverse nature of Prince Edward Island’s history.
Track copy through various review, proofreading, editing and production stages.
Communicate with authors, designers, printers, and others concerned with published work.
Ensure that each issue meets schedule targets.
Ensure that text, images, and captions are complete and of production-quality when delivered to the publication designer.
Ensure that copyright clearance for images and text has been supplied by authors.
Work collegially with an all-volunteer editorial board.
Oversee the distribution of each issue to members, subscribers and retail locations, in collaboration with the Sales, Marketing & Membership Coordinator and other staff.
Seek new locations where The Island Magazine and reaches agreements with retail representatives for selling the publication.
Participates in marketing each issue, alongside the Sales, Marketing & Membership Coordinator and the Communication and Fundraising Coordinator.
Prepares a written final report on the publication and distribution of each issue of The Island Magazine, identifying challenges and opportunities for future issues.
The Editor also occasionally writes features, shorter content pieces, and works on special projects where appropriate.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

Minimum of 1 year experience with scholarly publishing, including digital content.
Understanding of media trends, including digital media best practices.
Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines while working independently.
Commitment to quality, accuracy, and integrity.
Experience working on inclusion, diversity, and equity issues, particularly as they relate to historical understanding.
Passionate about Prince Edward Island’s history and a willingness to learn and explore more about our province’s past.
Experience with Adobe Acrobat proofing processes, Microsoft Word text creation and correction, Google Drive collaboration and archiving.
Demonstrated ability to attend to detail, particularly consistency of style and grammatical rigor.
A university degree in history or related field is an asset.
French is an asset, but not required.

Established in 1976, The Island Magazine is a bi-annual publication produced by the Prince Edward Island Museum & Heritage Foundation. The only magazine of its kind offering specialist content focused on sharing and uncovering the complex and diverse stories of PEI’s past.
